Zero-Sum Game. The Perverse Pseudo-Morality Promoted by Grace Church Seattle, The Faust’s & Other Anti-Gay Groups
by pinkagendist
“In game theory and economic theory, a zero-sum game is a mathematical representation of a situation in which a participant’s gain (or loss) of utility is exactly balanced by the losses (or gains) of the utility of the other participant(s).”
It’s not applicable to all aspects of life, but it’s certainly applicable to time & money, as those are finite resources. When you plan out your day, in most instances, one event will have to take precedence over another. When you budget your monthly expenses, you will most likely have to make choices. If your bonus is used for a new car, it can’t also be used to make home-improvements.
Nowhere is zero-sum game more evident and distressing than in the case of religious institutions. The battle over California’s Prop. 8 cost US$83,000,000. One side was fighting for legal protections for existing relationships. The other side was fighting to ensure that the relationships of members of the LGBT community not be entitled to protections regarding health, inheritance and the basic rights and obligations the law affords heterosexual couples who decide to legally commit to each other.
As John Becker eloquently wrote: “Proposition 8 wasn’t just some random, innocuous ballot initiative — it was a cruel, animus-driven crusade to strip a disfavored minority group of an existing and fundamental right. The campaign to pass it relied on lies and gutter-level fear-mongering, flooding the airwaves with images of smiling children accompanied by ominous warnings about how much they’d be harmed if voters didn’t enshrine marriage discrimination into the constitution.”
Those 83 million dollars could have been allocated to other causes, even very serious causes like disease, hunger or poverty. After all, the USA has 31 million people living on the edge of hunger. The time expended on fighting over what, before the law, is nothing more than a legal contract, was directly and indirectly responsible for a monumental waste of resources.
And this is where people like the Faust’s and Grace Church Seattle come in. Every cent and every minute they spend on their destructive endeavours aimed at marginalizing the LGBT community from society- a process they embark on by mangling logic, spreading nefarious myths and promoting ignorance- is time and money that they do not use for productive causes.
In the past few months Mrs. Faust used an inordinate amount of time for these destructive pursuits. She created a website, for which she paid. She engaged an ‘editor’, she drove members of her circle to participate in her anti-gay propaganda, she made an appearance on a radio show promoting her venture. And the question we’re left with is what sort of ethics or morality is this that impeding two adults from signing a legal contract that only affects the signatories is of a higher priority than assisting those in great distress?
Here is where the magic happens and where they spread this perverse and disgusting vision:
I fully agree with your moral indignation, it’s really pathetic.
It’s basically a scam. They know if they drum up fear, they drum up membership thereby enriching themselves.
I have never understood homophobia.
All the xenophobias are related. Political tools used to force social cohesion. They serve as a method to unite a group against a common enemy. Just ask the Jews…
I think you’re spot on the money here. When i called what they did cheap tribalism they all reacted badly. That, to me, is a sign that they know precisely what they’re doing, and what they’re doing is following the same MO of the likes Glenn Beck and Limbaugh. Batshitcrazy sells.
They’re actually a bit worse than Beck and Limbaugh. These people are the unsuccessful Avon ladies of hate-mongering. Door-to-door desperados attempting to make a buck no matter the cost to others.
You have a way with words, Pink 🙂
You should see my hand signals when I’m driving!!! 😀
Sounds like the bulwark of many US conservative ideological platforms/campaigns.
And shockingly, not enough people see through it and not only join but contribute money to these hate factories.
@Pinkagendist
It is sad how many religious organizations promote corrosive sectarian thinking. You would think that these noble followers of christ wouldn’t have to scapegoat other people to advance their agenda.
Of course, the in-group/out-group dichotomy lies at the heart of most religions – I’m not sure how you get around the whole denigrating others to ensure your own pious nature thing.
Psychologically, I imagine they have to rationalize it. The more they dehumanize the LGBT community, the easier it becomes to persecute.
The Rwandan genocide was an extraordinary example of this method. The Hutu’s began by creating mass hysteria. Keep in mind that the Tutsi’s were a minority who didn’t even have the right to participate in government, and yet they were successfully portrayed as the aggressors…
Arb, you should pop over and jump into the “I’m coming out” post. It’s a wild ride.
John, I popped in and wild ride it was. Plus, you’re absolutely right, that when “tribalism” entered the dialog, there was a big shift in not only the dialog, but also how they approached it.
Thanks, Tom. Yeah, it seems i hit a nerve there 😉
Not sure if you caught the last few posts, but that website is a scam. An effort led by a pastor’s wife to drive traffic to her church. I got suspicious because the messages all came from the same IP… I’m going to do an exposé and post it to Queer Landia in the next few days.
Ah…that would be welcomed…)))
Link?
Be warned, your blood is going to boil, and they will gang-up on you. It’s fun, though 🙂
Nevermind, I found it. Oh, only half way though and I already have the faint imprint of my palm on my forehead…
Good, you found it…sorry about the palm print.. 😉
You aren’t still on there are you?!!
Of course! I think Duck has fled, but Tisha and her wingman are still going it 🙂
I’m just reading. Be back in a minute when I have finished snorting 😀
@JZ
I’m interested in how Tisha is going to explain how wrong you are about those biblical passages. It is really quite amazing how they will not address straightforward points about their ooga-booga, they have the bare minimum of awareness of how terrible their text is.
I’m sure she’ll try to wriggle out of it, but you know i can be a terribly stubborn person 😉
@JZ
Oh, I am well aware of that. Let’s see if my comments get past moderation. Damn you. 🙂
Be polite’iesh. I hear she does delete comments.
Done and done.
I gave my take on Tisha’s 7 points, we’ll see what happens.
Why oh why do we have to continue to drag these people kicking and screaming into modernity. I swear, on some days the Enlightenment feels like a stretch.
Oh, I’m just reading your latest post, and understand completely what you’re saying!
OK. Snorts are over. Very good. Unlike you, I do not know the bible well. I have two or three versions of it, but I have no intention of reading it and analysing it for the purpose of dealing with such prejudiced people.
Have you joined in SoM’s yet, where darling loveable Ms Bigot says that someone is whipping Pink’s arse? or words to that effect.
Ivve never been into the BDSM thing… that’s pastor territory: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/10/11/autopsy_controversy/
a link to where I’m being mentioned, please 😀
It’s that SoM person. do you have it or not, I don’t. I’ll have to look through violet’s to find it. Or is it insanity bytes? Anyway try that first. Go darling. Go 🙂
Yup it’s insanity bytes. Link on Vi’s.
Link?
Oh dear, can’t remember it. Don’t worry, if I find it, I’ll add it, just had to tell pink about insanity where darling Katy applauds insan for beating him on violets. I really need to leave this alone and cook chips.
You have to catch the chips first, and they can be slippery! 🙂
Culpa mea. I was confusing all these blogs with each other because I read insanity and silence this morning. I don’t follow them, so I have to look them up.
Clearly does my head in and is bad for health. Ms Bigot was whipping on insanity. You’d already contributed on SoM’s and achieved the usual snort award.
Or: Mea Culpa 😀 Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa 😀
My Latin is restricted to amo amas amat and the Aenead. Luckily church latin didn’t come into it.
Thanks!
Did you see where Katy Faust said this on her website: “True Christianity will also be the first to sacrifice and serve their gay neighbors and family members.”
This statement is so absurd as to be laughable.
As I said to John Z, she feels the need to become the Avon Lady of bigotry, spreading xenophobia from door to door- hoping she’ll make it big like Ann Coulter.
The problem is recycled Jerry Falwell propaganda isn’t quite going to make the cut.
Katy has a twist on her propaganda. The anti-gay rhetoric on her website, which includes the tired concept that gays are abnormal, is couched under the guise of fostering dialogue and being “loving.”
She’s trying to convince everyone that people who are anti-gay aren’t all “haters” that they can “deeply love gays” (While simultaneously treating them like second class citizens and denying them basic human rights, of course. That goes without saying.)
One thing I pointed out to her is how obsessed the religious are with gay sex. It’s all they focus on. It’s really quite odd, this intense interest in what others are doing in their bedrooms. Frankly, I don’t have the time to think about others’ sex lives.
I had an interesting discussion with an American friend today who said that the tactics of Grace Church and those like them remind her of the Klu Klux Klan. Some of them wore hoods to ‘protect’ their anonymity but claimed their campaign wasn’t about hate, just preserving their traditional society. I want to look into this and find the parallels – some similar quotes from racists to display to them would be useful.
There’s something you’ll find even more interesting that relates to what she does…
Go to the first link on this post: https://pinkagendist.wordpress.com/2014/02/02/the-religious-bastardization-of-language-purgatory-is-a-proctologists-waiting-room/
It’s disconcerting. I had to read it 3 or 4 times to fully grasp the author’s intent. You’ll see how he turns language on its head. Freedom means slavery. Slavery means freedom. Extraordinary.
Just for the record, and your private notes… My classicism/elitism is entirely intentional. It subverts standardized notions of the world. As the story goes, gays are marginal beings who live on the sidelines of society. My establishment status throws a wrench into that mindset.
The other day I received an email from a young man who told me it was amazing that 13 years ago he saw Mike and I set up house in a conservative world and just throttle forward despite all the hostility. Our circumstances turned everyone’s prejudices upside down.
I promise there’s method to my madness and snobbery, so you’ll have to read between the lines 😉
Fair enough. But I do genuinely enjoy having a variety of comments on my site, and insanitybites for me has an interesting opinion that always makes me think about things differently. Even if I don’t agree. I wouldn’t like people like her to shy away from commenting because they receive a constant barrage of (childish) insults. 🙂
You should do a post on it. A bit like Violet did ‘an all about me’ one. Am I hateful or something I think she called it.
You could write:
Am I classist, snobby, elitist and stick my education and wealth in your face?
If so, do you find it offensive? Or do you admire rich handsome educated gays like me?
Do you think I sound hypocritical?
Or do you really not care two hoots about any of that and just like to see photos of my dogs, my garden and the arty posts?
Do you think it is rude of me to call unthinking fools imbeciles?
etc – you get the idea.
Most church edifices look good, did they convert an ugly house to be church building.
Some people are just beyond help. They care so much about what others they do they forget when they have crossed the line
