Atheism as an Objective Concept; It’s not that a god couldn’t exist, it’s that YOUR god doesn’t exist.

This is a mistake I believe many of my fellow atheists, including quite prominent ones, have been making for years. Atheism should not be treated as a subjective concept, by doing so we fall into the same (il)logical traps as theists. Our motto should not be that a god could not exist, but that there is no evidence to support any of the god theories that have been presented to the world thus far.
Should a theory with verifiable evidence of a god be presented in future (however unlikely), we will happily test it. Meanwhile we can say with confidence that what theists call evidence to support their faith in their respective religions holds no water; We are therefore atheists in regards to Christianity, Islam, the Hebrew religion, Hinduism et al.

I couldn’t agree more. This is exactly the point I make to my theist friends when we’re debating.
They always tell me “Atheism is also a religion, because you say there is no god” etc, etc.
I simply tell them that I disagree. I don’t “say there is no god,” I simply “don’t believe there is based on the evidence available to us.”
Big difference right there.
I used to have long religious discussions with a Mormon friend. The reason we could converse and stay friends for years is we always treated each other with respect. I never sneered and her beliefs and she never insulted my inteligence.
Dawkins made a clever point in The God Delusion when he said that all Christians (for example) are atheists: Christians don’t believe in the Hindu gods or the Sikh god or the Zoroastrian god, etc., etc., etc.
An atheist simply believes in one less god than a Christian.
thank god
