The Magnificent Chavela Vargas 1919-2012. If my heart had a nationality it would be Mexican.
She wore men’s clothes, she smoked cigars and drank on stage. She died this week at the age of 93. I used to listen to her a lot when I was a child. My French grandmother used to say the way Chavela sang was overly-sentimental, I would answer that if my heart could sing, it would sound just like Chavela (or María Dolores Pradera, click here for a magnificent version of El tiempo que te quede libre- The time you have left, dedicate it to me).
